Our first trial batches are done!

Wow, its been a long road getting to this day. We started out with a mission to make New Zealand's most nutritious dry dog food and there have been a few twists in the road along the way. Starting a new business is not an easy path, but we're getting there.

We had a few not negotiables when developing our food. The first was that all of the main ingredients had to come from New Zealand. That in itself was not too challenging, but very time consuming. The main benefit from this was that we considered ingredients that have not traditionally been available in dog foods imported into New Zealand. Getting the ingredients in small enough amounts to do some trial work was a bit more difficult, but eventually we tracked down some amazing suppliers who have been very supportive.

The second was that we wanted to make a food with the lowest carbohydrate content that we feasibly could manufacture. All kibble based diets require some carbohydrate content to bind the meat and other ingredients together and to hold the shaped of the kibble. Most foods go way beyond what is required though and add higher levels of carbs as they are a far cheaper ingredient than meat.

As we wanted a high meat, low carb product getting the carbs down was crucial to our success. Our first batch had 20% carbs and was a complete failure! Back to the drawing board/excel spreadsheet! Several batches later and we had a product that was binding together nicely and still under 30% carbs. Not quite as low as we'd initially hoped but far lower than other kibble based diets on the market. Phew!

Next step taste testing.

One of the key things I learnt as a veterinarian in clinical practice was that if you recommended a certain food to a client they would most likely buy one bag, but it was totally up to the dog as to whether the owners came back to buy another one!

There's a new trend happening in the pet food market, one that we have inadvertently become part of - pest to plate. In other words, taking a pest species and turning it into a product that is desirable to eat.
