Wild Caught NZ Possum

Why use possum meat in your pet food?

As a vet in clinical practice I had a lot of clients who were hunters and who frequently fed their dogs possum. They would often rave about how well the dogs did on a diet of possum, with the occasional exception of a case of constipation if they ate the fur as well as the meat!

Studies have shown that possum meat has higher amounts of beneficial omega 3 and 6 fatty acids than other red meats. I suppose that shouldn't be surprising given that possums are leading a free range lifestyle snacking on our most delicious native leaves and berries, as well as birds eggs, chicks and insects.

Possum is especially high in linoleic acid (LA), an omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid that is thought to be the most important essential fatty acid for dogs and cats. It plays a vital role in maintaining a healthy skin and coat and so possum meat is a particularly useful addition to the diet of dogs which suffer from skin problems.

Where does your possum meat come from?

Our supplier has been in the business of supplying wild game meat to raw pet food companies for over 20 years. Possum is trapped throughout the North Island and is from TB free areas and where no 1080 poison has been dropped. The wild game industry is highly regulated by the Ministry for Primary Industries and our supplier is audited frequently to ensure compliance with the stringent regulations required.
