OUR INGREDIENTS

Grass Fed New Zealand Lamb

Have you noticed that most pet food companies use only meat meals in their products? This is because these meals are cheaper, despite being highly processed.

We've developed our food with real New Zealand lamb meat as our main ingredient and we also use wild caught New Zealand possum meat.

New Zealand’s pasture based farming system grows the best lamb in the World. Grass fed meat has been shown to have higher levels of omega 3 fatty acids than intensive factory farmed or feedlot meats. A large amount of New Zealand lamb is exported to other countries for use in their pet food. We believe we should feed our pets the best, so why not use NZ lamb and make our food right here?

We also use some lamb meal in our product, but its not our main ingredient. It's  added for extra protein and to balance the Calcium and Phosphorus levels in our food, which is important for bone health.

We're against factory farming and we're proud to use ingredients that are free range. We've sourced our grass fed lamb meat and lamb meal from Canterbury and the Hawkes Bay respectively.

Peas

Peas provide a great protein boost to our food, as well as being a source of carbohydrates, fibre and many essential vitamins and minerals. Peas contain load of phytonutrients and also vitamin K, which helps with calcium absorption.

Peas are also a more sustainable protein source as the pea plant fixes nitrogen into the soil as it grows, thus requiring less fertiliser than many other crops.

Our peas are grown on the Canterbury plains.

Potatoes

Potatoes are a great vegetable addition to our food. Potatoes provide carbohydrate and fibre, as well as being a great source of Vitamin C, Potassium and B vitamins.

Our potatoes are sourced from throughout New Zealand.

Flax Seed Meal

Flax seed meal is made from ground flax seed, also known as Linseed. Grinding the hard outer seed coat makes the nutrients easier to digest. It is rich in the essential omega 3 fatty acid alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), as well as being high in soluble and insoluble fibre, protein and lignans, which are powerful antioxidants.

We use a high quality flax seed meal which is grown on the Canterbury Plains and processed in Ashburton.

Hemp Seed Oil

We're actually pretty excited to be using hemp seed oil in our food. This oil is renowned for its excellent fatty acid profile, in particular the essential omega 6 fatty acid Linoleic Acid. This fatty acid is especially important in maintaining skin and coat integrity and thus a diet higher in Linoleic Acid is beneficial for dogs with skin and coat conditions such as dry skin, allergies or excessive shedding.

Hemp seed oil is cold pressed from the seeds of the hemp plant (Cannabis sativa). Not to be confused with marijuana, hemp is a non-psychoactive (less than 1% THC) variety of Cannabis sativa L

Hemp is a very sustainable crop to grow, requiring less water and fertiliser than traditional crops and shading out weed plants, thus requiring less herbicides for its production.

Our hemp seed oil is grown in Mid-Canterbury and pressed into oil in Ashburton.

Rosemary Oil

Naturally preserved with rosemary oil.

As a vet in clinical practice I had a lot of clients who were hunters and who frequently fed their dogs possum. They raved about how well the dogs did on a diet of possum, with the occasional exception of a case of constipation if they ate the fur as well as the meat!

Studies have shown that possum meat is especially high in linoleic acid (LA), an omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid that plays a vital role in maintaining a healthy skin and coat. So possum meat is a particularly useful addition to the diet of dogs which suffer from skin problems and allergies.

Our supplier has been supplying wild game meat to raw pet food companies for over 20 years. Possum is trapped throughout the North Island and is from TB free areas, where no 1080 has been dropped. The wild game industry is highly regulated by the Ministry for Primary Industries and our supplier is audited frequently to ensure compliance with the stringent regulations required.

We're pretty stoked that our pet food can contribute to reducing the impact these pests have on our environment.
